While you are in the area, there are lots of other places to visit and things to do.
If you enjoy sport, you can visit Balmoor Stadium to see Peterhead FC play, or join Jogscotland Peterhead for one of their regular runs. There is also an athletics club, and you can swim, keep fit and learn archery at the Community Centre. Look out for their cinema schedule, too. If you want to find out more about your family history, you can join the Family History Society of Buchan. For more general local history, visit the Arbuthnot Museum, the new Admiralty Gateway museum (in the former Peterhead Prison) or the Buchanhaven Heritage Centre. Whatever your interests - a list will soon be available to download.
Peterhead Fishing Heritage Centre
Tucked away just off Harbour Street, behind the Dolphin Café, and within sight of the trail panels at the Russian cannon is one of the town’s hidden historic gems.
A group of volunteers have gathered a fascinating collection of photographs, documents and a treasure-trove of artefacts connected to Peterhead’s fishing industry. Exhibits include intricate models of some of the varieties of boat which have fished out of the port over the years; photographs of families from local fishing villages; displays showing the impact of the two world wars on the town; and photos of the railway that served the area for almost 100 years. The volunteers are very welcoming and happy to share their knowledge.
This is an interesting place to visit and a fantastic educational resource which has already helped pupils from many local schools explore their heritage. School visits can also be tied into harbour tours.
The centre is open every Wednesday from 10am until 3.30pm. Visits outwith these times can be organised by contacting Margie Davidson, either by email@example.com by calling 01779 812243 to leave a message.
